Ram Darbar Tanjore Painting : Tamil Nadu : c. 1940

This Tanjore is a depiction of Ram Darbar, an auspicious gathering to celebrate the return of Lord Ram, Sita, and Lakshman from exile. In this painting we see Lord Ram seated on a throne and is the central subject of this painting. His hand is in Vitarka Mudra which represents concentration and mindfulness. His other hand is in Bhumisparsha Mudra representing a connection to the Earth. On his right is Sita holding a lotus in her hand and next to her is Lakshman holding a royal golden umbrella over Ram. Supporting Ram’s right foot is Hanuman who is a loyal devotee of his. On his left are the Saptarishis or Seven Sages who are blessing the divine couple upon their return to Ayodhya. The people depicted on the bottom of the painting are all devotees of Ram who have come to celebrate his return.
