Raja Ravi Varma is an iconic Indian artist, who is best known for his unique oil paintings, mainly depicting scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. His work combined western realism with Hindu iconography, painting deities, Gods, and Goddess in the likeness of human-kind.

He was instrumental in making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public. His work increased the involvement of the common people with fine art and moulded their artistic tastes.

This is an original Ravi Varma lithograph from the press in Karla, Lonavala, Maharashtra. It was printed by Anant Shivaji Desai for sale in Moti Bazar Mumbai. This press printed Ravi Varma’s artwork between 1906 and 1945.

This is a depiction of Bhamasura, Mohini, and Lord Shiva. The word ‘bhasma’ means ashes and ‘asura’ means demon. Legend has it that Bhasmasura was a loyal Shiva devotee who after great penance was granted the ability to turn anyone he touched with his right hand into ashes by Lord Shiva. After receiving this boon, in his lust for power, he started chasing Lord Shiva with the intention of turning him into ashes. Lord Shiva sought shelter with Lord Vishnu and asked him for help. Lord Vishnu then takes the form of Mohini and gets the attention of Bhasmasura. It’s love at first sight, Bhasmasura sees Mohini and says he will do anything to have her hand in marriage. In response she says, I will marry you if you imitate my dancing. She begins dancing and gently tapping her fingers on her head. As soon as Bhasmasura touches his head with his right hand he is turned into ashes.
