Raja Ravi Varma is an iconic Indian artist and is best known for his unique oil paintings, mainly depicting scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. His work combined western realism with Hindu iconography, painting Gods and Goddesses in the likeness of human beings.

He was instrumental in making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public. His work increased the involvement of the common people with fine art and moulded their artistic tastes.

This is an original Ravi Varma lithograph from the press in Karla, Lonavala, Maharashtra. It was printed by Anant Shivaji Desai for sale in Moti Bazar Mumbai. This press printed Ravi Varma’s artwork between 1906 and 1945.

This scene depicts an incident in the Bhagavata, Dasama Skanda. The central figure is Usha, the daughter of Banasura. One night a prince appears in her dreams and she believes that this is the man she is destined to marry. However, she is unable to identify this person so her friend Chitralekha paints pictures of every prince that is known to her. Finally, she paints Aniruddha and Usha is elated when she sees him and is finally able to identify the man from her dreams.
