St. Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226) was an Italian Catholic friar, preacher, and mystic, renowned for his deep devotion to poverty, humility, and care for all living creatures. Born into a wealthy family, Francis renounced his wealth after a spiritual transformation and chose a life of simplicity, dedicating himself to serving the poor and sick. He founded the Franciscan Order in 1209, promoting values of peace, compassion, and love for nature. His famous "Canticle of the Sun" reenacts his reverence for creation, addressing the elements—sun, moon, wind, and re—as siblings.
