Raja Ravi Varma is an iconic Indian artist, who is known for his unique oil paintings. They mainly depicted scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. His work combined western realism with Hindu iconography, painting deities, Gods, and Goddess in the likeness of human-kind. He was instrumental in making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public. His work increased the involvement of the common people with fine art and moulded their artistic tastes.
This is an original Ravi Varma lithograph from the press in Karla, Lonavala, Maharashtra. It was printed by Anant Shivaji Desai for sale in Moti Bazar Mumbai. This press printed Ravi Varma’s artwork between 1906 and 1945.
The print is of Mohini, an avatar of Vishnu where he assumes the form of a beautiful intelligent woman. He assumes this form and uses Mohini’s grace and femininity to defeat and protect the universe. Vishnu has adopted this incarnation when the nectar of immortality was to be distributed only to the Gods and not the demons. At this time, Vishnu adopts the form of this brilliant woman and convinces the demons into acceding to give the nectar to the Gods first. The other time is when Mohini saves Lord Shiva from the threat of Bhasmasura.
