Raja Ravi Varma is an iconic Indian artist, who is known for his unique oil paintings, mainly depicting scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. His work combined western realism with Hindu iconography, painting deities, Gods, and Goddess in the likeness of human-kind.

He was instrumental in making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public. His work increased the involvement of the common people with fine art and moulded their artistic tastes.

This is an original Ravi Varma lithograph from the press in Karla, Lonavala, Maharashtra. It was printed by Anant Shivaji Desai for sale in Moti Bazar Mumbai. This press printed Ravi Varma’s artwork between 1906 and 1945.

This lithograph depicts Dhruv Narayan or the pole star. This is a story of a young boy, who is extremely dedicated and devoted to Lord Vishnu. Dhruva was born to King Uttanapada and Suniti. He is disliked by the King’s second wife Suruchi because she wants her son to have the king’s favour. After being chided by Suruchi, a five-year-old Dhruva goes to the forest to pray and seek the Lord’s blessing and advice. Nothing sways the young boy's path as he recites the sacred mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" repeatedly. Dhruva's determination knows no bounds and the lord, immensely pleased with the boy's austerity, appears before him and grants him a boon. Dhruva, who is only filled with thoughts of Vishnu, seeks a simple boon that he will forever hold Lord Vishnu in his heart.
