Sarasvati : Raja Ravi Verma Lithograph : Lonavala : C 1940

Raja Ravi Varma is an iconic Indian artist, who is known for his unique oil paintings, mainly depicting scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. His work combined western realism with Hindu iconography, painting deities, Gods, and Goddess in the likeness of human-kind.

He was instrumental in making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public. His work increased the involvement of the common people with fine art and moulded their artistic tastes.

This lithograph is of Goddess Sarasvati, she is a symbol of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. Here she is depicted sitting on a rock by the water in a white saree which is a colour synonymous with her. Her iconography is typically in white themes from dress to flowers to swan – the colour symbolizes Sattwa Guna or purity, discrimination for true knowledge, insight, and wisdom. She is usually depicted near a flowing river or a body of water, which is a reference to her early history as a river Goddess.
